Calcined Alumina is a key material in ceramics, derived by heating aluminum hydroxide to remove bound water, resulting in an anhydrous form of alumina (Al₂O₃). This calcination process produces a harder, more chemically stable version of alumina that has distinct properties compared to the raw material.

Role in Ceramics

• Refractory Material: Calcined alumina is used in high-temperature ceramics and kiln furniture due to its excellent thermal resistance and stability at elevated temperatures.
• Glaze Opacifier: It acts as an opacifier in glazes, helping to reduce transparency and create a more solid, matte appearance. Calcined alumina can contribute to the development of crystalline structures in glazes, enhancing surface texture and visual effects.
• Mechanical Strength: When incorporated into ceramic bodies, it increases the hardness and mechanical strength, making the final product more durable and resistant to wear.

Thermal Expansion

Calcined alumina has a relatively low thermal expansion coefficient, which helps improve thermal shock resistance in ceramic bodies and glazes. This property makes it ideal for products subjected to rapid temperature changes, such as kiln shelves, technical ceramics, and specialized glazes.
