Calcium Carbonate (CaCO₃) or Whiting is a common raw material used in ceramic glazes and bodies. It occurs naturally in various forms, such as limestone, chalk, and marble, and is processed into a fine powder for use in ceramics. When fired, calcium carbonate decomposes into calcium oxide (CaO) and releases carbon dioxide gas (CO₂), contributing to the glaze's melt.

Role in Ceramics

  • Flux: In glazes, calcium carbonate acts as a flux, reducing the melting temperature of the glaze. This helps the glaze form a smooth and glassy surface, improving durability and aesthetic qualities.
  • Stability: Calcium carbonate stabilizes glaze colorants and can enhance the gloss of the final fired surface.
  • Body Strength: In clay bodies, calcium carbonate aids in the maturation process by increasing the strength and density of the ceramic.

Safety Note

Handling calcium carbonate in its powdered form requires caution, as inhaling fine dust particles can pose health risks. Proper ventilation, masks, and protective gear should be used when working with this material.
